Heart attacks are a major cause of mortality in the United States.  In both men and women, cardiac arrest is the number one cause of death.

  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating Healthy
  • Losing Weight
  • Exercising Regularly

  • Statins (like Atorvastatin,Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin).  Weaker statins like pravastatin (or red yeast) can also help.
  • Medications that keep high blood pressure under control.

Sometimes, being proactive about your health can save your life.  If you are having new symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath, it could be a signal that you are about to have a heart attack (if you are not having one already!).



How To reduce Chest Pain

Reducing chest pain depends on the cause of the chest pain.

If you are having pain from GERD, then a medication called PPI (proton pump inhibitor) can help.  These include medications like pantoprazole.

However, oftentimes the pain is related to a blood flow issue to the heart.  In that case, testing would need to be done to make sure it is not a heart attack.  Some patient have known heart disease and have chronic chest pains that are stable (stable angina).  In that case, certain medications can be use that help reduce or eliminate pain that can impair quality of life.  Such medications include beta blockers (like metoprolol), venodilators (like isosorbide mononitrate or IMDUR), and other medications like Ranolazine.
